This piece is one I'm incredibly proud of, even compared to some of the other work included in my portfolio. This postcard was designed to be passed out at events, in participating shops, etc. More than providing a lot of information or being a large piece, the goal of this design was to catch attention. To be something people would like to take home or put somewhere they'll see. Hopefully, it will get interested folks to take a look at when our festival is this year, and make a note to come.
I took heavy inspiration from vintage travel postcards, though what gave me the idea to go in that direction was actually Bruce Springsteen's "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ" album cover. Can't go wrong with some good ol' nostalgia!
This design really didn't come to me that quickly, I spent a week or two just kicking ideas around that weren't working at all. The backside of the card with the rainbow and dates came together relatively easily, and I really only did some minor tweaks and editing to the idea from its initial concept to the final look. The "photo" side was what gave me trouble. I did a lot of fighting and playing around with concepts for how I could incorporate real photos into the design, while not having it be a bland "single photo" look (Not that those can't be absolutely beautiful, but I wanted this to be a little more creative).
Once the vintage postcard idea hit though, the design fell in place incredibly quickly. It took a little trouble to create the exact look I wanted, but in the end I'm incredibly happy with it, and it's a design that has received a lot of positive attention, both at Capital Pride events, and in design specific spaces where I've been able to show it off.
